Waving to greet us as we rolled onto Little Trevarrack site, St Ives, was Pope Benedict XVI. He had inherited the late Pope John Paul's Lunar Meteorite after his sad demise. "When the Cardinal's were deciding who was to be John Paul's successor," he told me, "they found out about my previous experience as an HGV driver, and that clinched the job for me. A perfect papal candidate with towing experience!"
He showed me a few modifications he had carried out on the ex Pope's van. He had replaced the Portapotti with a cassette toilet, and was extremely proud of his portable satellite dish. "Perfect for watching the live coverage of Big Brother on E4," he informed me. Pope Benedict is an avid fan of Big Brother, and times his vacations from the Vatican to coincide with the run of Big Brother in the UK. "It's a bit of a hike to the nearest pubs," he informed me, "so make sure you get stocked up at the local Tesco's." He then proceeded to show me his two 24 packs of John Smith's smooth, he had just purchased and urged me to do the same as the offer ran out at the end of the week.

Another guest at Little Trevarrick is international megastar Bernie Clifton. Bernie chose not to take the regular bus journey into St. Ives, preferring instead the mile walk to the beautiful beach at Carbis Bay. "It's quite a trek," he told me, "and extremely steep when your on your way back. At least I've got my ostrich to save my legs." Bernie was quite impressed with Little Trevarrack, and was quite pleased that he had been able to book it at quite short notice. "When you have a hectic schedule like I do, leaping from plane to plane.....Vegas......Hollywood......Sutton on Sea....." he said, "sometimes you're not able to book your annual holidays at Cornwall in January. So it's great that you can leave it a little later and still get a pitch."
It wasn't Barry Manilows first time at St. Ives, but it was his first time staying on Little Trevarrack. He told me that last year he had stayed on Little Trevarrack's sister site, Polmanter, but had decided not to book Polmanter this year because of the distress he suffered there on his last holiday. Apparently, non swimmer Barry was hurt, by the cruel sniggerings of some children as he bathed in Polmanter's outdoor pool, in his armbands, and he vowed never to return. So Barry didn't mind the lack of the pool, but certainly made the most of the Laser Quest at the large family bar, just off the campsite.

Staying for the season was beautiful Pop Idol winner, Michelle McMannus. She was starring at St. Ives Little Theatre, taking the lead role in it's production of 'Chicago.' "I'm not a trained dancer," she told me, "but all my years working as a Pole Dancer at the Spearmint Rhino Gentlemen's Club, Sheffield, put me in good stead for the role. It's lovely here," she said. "Though I'm busy at night, there's so much to do in the day. I love it in my inflatable dingy, or surfing on my body board on Porthmeor beach. The site's great too, the pitches are a lovely size, and the toilet facilities are immaculate."
Here is Amanda Barrie, sitting outside her dome tent. She wasn't very happy, after being told off for flying her kite. I explained it was for her own safety, considering the power lines overhead, but she wasn't having any of it. "I can't do anything here," she complained, "I can't ride my electric scooter, they won't let me play on my roller blades, it's just not fair." However, she was happier later on in the day, when a group of friends she had made on the site came round to play. They were having a great time, dancing around their MP3 player to Crazy Frog's Greatest Hits.
All in all, a lovely site, not many facilities, but considering all St. Ives has to offer, and the fact the site has a regular, cheap bus service into St. Ives compensates. And if you are not lucky enough to meet the celebs that were there on our stay, you can enjoy some of the lovely views over St Ives Bay.
